USC has been trying to regain possession of the parking lot
located on the corner of Pickens and Blossom streets since it
was forced by a court order in June of 1979 to return the
property to the Rembert family.
The Remberts views the $85,000 figure as a "a ridiculously
low amount," according to family attorney William Pope.
Pope said although the Remberts have not set a price, they
want more than $85,000 for the lot since all surrounding land
was sold at a much higher nrice
POPE said the family is willing to sell the land but USC has
never asked the Remberts to determine the property value.
"There was no attempt by USC to offer a fair purchase
price. Right now we are in a holding position, perfectly
willing to negotiate and would like to do so," he said.
The family had been using the land as a parking lot, renting
spaces for $15 per month. According to Pope, however, the
threat of condemnation eliminated any possible income for
nearly two years. Pope said the family stopped using the land
after USC mentioned condemnation because they felt that
they could lose it at any moment.
Previously attempted condemnation procedures were
dismissed "without prejudice," meaning that USC can refile
its claim on the land, and hearings were dismissed because
the University did not have the Board of Trustees'
authorization to proceed with them and because no funds
were appropriated to pay for the property.
