Both movies are charming, exciting and altogether inJ volving. In addition, both are extraordinarily well-made, $j| with state-of-the-art special % effects (by Lucas' Industrial 1 Light X Maeio) that rpin I force the ideas and actions inherent to their delightfully off-beat, but audiencepleasing, screenplays. "Raiders," produced by l Lucas and directed bySpielberg, is the first , installment of a proposed ' trilogy of films about Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), a heroic archeologist who rbihhlps in stolen ar tifacts when he isn't lecturing at a prominent New England university. He is chased by a horde of poisoned dart-blowing natives, manaced by a pack of machine gun-wielding Nazis, punched-out by his k o M/l * 1 r\ Ir I rt rt? m! f Mt /4 imi u-ui niMiig gii in icuu (Karen Allen), betrayed by a pet monkey, locked in an Egyptian tomb (where he's surrounded by slithering snakes), nearly burned alive, and nearly decapitated by an airplane propeller. All this and much, much more takes place in the movie's first half. The viewer never doubts that Jones will win in the end, but at the same time, he's always worried that he just might not be right. Sir Raiph Richardson is Ulrich, an aging sorcerer whose help in killing the dragon is sought by a group of villagers led by Valerian (Caitlin Clarke), a young woman who poses as a man in order to avoid the lottery wherein the dragon's viet: ? urns arc* cnosen. Peter MacNichol is Galen, the sorcerer's apprentice, who falls in love with Valerian and who wants to slay the dragon in order to protect her, once her transvestism is revealed. "Dragonslayer" plays much better than it sminHs anu me acting ib ifiipf?SSiv , especially that of Richardson. But it's the dragon who is unquestionably the star of the show. THE BEAST of the title is no ordinary fire-breathing lizard. It swims, flies, devours virgins, burns entire ritips and pv*?n mourns th*? deaths of its young. And for the first time in movie history, we have a scaly monster that doesn't look like he just lumbered in off the set of the last Godzilla movie, with rubber cement still dripping from the places where his wings join his body. OU real, in fact, that kiddies should be steered clear, even though the movie carries a PG rating and is a coproduction of Walt Disney Studios. (Paramount Pictures is the film's other corporate backer.) All others, however, are advised not to miss either 4 ' Dragonslay er " or "Raiders of the Lost Ark." COME January, both films undoubtedly will be sitting atop virtually every "10 Best" list on can find.
