Officials T Freshman By LEKOY WILLIAMS In an attempt to increase on-campus housing for incoming freshmen, USC housing officials have discontinued leasing apartments in the Woodland Terrace complex to single undergraduate students Undergraduates who renewed tneir nousing contracts by the April 17 deadline will be allowed to stay in the apartments next year but leasing the apartments only to graduate students and married undergraduate students will make more oncampus housing available to freshmen, according to Rachael Carr, director of family housing. Carr said opening up more Woodland Terrace apartments to graduate students would encourage them to live there. This, in turn, would open up more dorm rooms for undergraduates. "Graduate students are better able to take care of themselves than incoming freshmen," she said. CARR SAII) USC had been leasing 35 Woodland Terrace double occupancy units to undergraduate students for about three years, but she didn't know how many graduate and undergraduate students live there. Carr said apartment rent will be USC To Re From Staff Reports board's auth ? the universi Due to claims that USC demnationpa acted without the board of Although trustee's approval when it authorizatio took action last August to needed in condemn "the Pit" parking demnation p lot, the suit has been 5th circuit "dismissed without presided ovc ni*ninrl?/iA M 11 _ J r - 1 chjv-ui uui^ 10 canea ior cia USC President James B. board's role Holderman. demnation pr USC intends to refile with board authorization BY HKEN however, and hopes to end dismiss the the six-year-old conflict by with board ; fall, the president said. will avoid a "i During a condemnation to when the hearing in March. Men's housing director David Macaulay confirmed the reasons for the leases. "We can't meet the demand for housing for the different segments of the population,' Macaulay said. "The most critical part is signing up freshmen after the continuing students sign up." USC has been steadily eliminating graduate on-campus housing for about a year, Macaulay said. Graduate students may live on campus if they choose, but they may be assigned an undergraduate roommate. He said the demand for graduate on-campus housing has decreased in recent years. IN THE past, many designated graduate halls were virtually empty while freshmen waited to get rooms on campus. A few years ago in one dorm there were 17 graduates while more than 1,000 undergraduates were on the dorm's waiting list, Macaulay said.
