I Carolina's baseball team travels to
I Charleston tonight to meet the Citadel
ijf Bulldogs in a contest scheduled to start at
j? 7:30p.m.
The Gamecocks now stand at 29-9 this
H year, not including last night's scheduled
game with Mercer.
USC split an abbreviated series this past
I weekend with the r???mber 11 team in the
I country, r loriaa state's Seminoles.
Carolina dropped the first game Friday
night, but came back to post a victory
Sunday afternoon. Saturday night's game
was rained out.
The Seminoles, who took two out of three
games from the Gamecocks in Tallahassee,
Fla., during the spring break, won the
season series between the two ballclubs
three games to two.

Head Baseball Coach June Raines said.
"These are the kinds of teams you've got to
play hard against. I thought the five games
were good games."
I USC dumped the Seminoles 8-3 Sunday to
hand Florida State their 17th loss in 52
outings.
The Gamecocks rallied from an early 1-0
deficit to score four times in the second
inning. Singles by Paul Hollins, Chris Boyle,
a double by Rob Lowery, and a single by
Jamey Thaw gave USC a 2-1 lead.

Carolina added single tallies in the third

pitcher Dennis Lubert in the seventh inning.

THE GAMECOCKS lost their fourth game
of the year to rain Saturday night.

Martinez when heavy showers hit the field.
After waiting slightly more than half an
hour the game was cancelled.
The Gamecocks, ranked 17th in the
nation, had taken a 3-0 lead in the second
inning. Williams knocked in one run with a
fielder's choice. Lowery scored on a delayed
double steal, and Vollmer doubled in
Williams to give the Gamecocks a 3-0 lead
with pitching ace Bret Baynham on the
mound.
"I hate to see a 3-0 lead go down the drain,
even though they had a couple of runners on
base," Raines said. "It's ail umpire's
decision (to cancel the game). It rained an
awful lot, and they don't want to get
anybody hurt and I can understand that. But
I think if we had waited another hour or so
we could have possibly played, but that is a
long wait for everybody.''
Haines probably wished Friday night's
game with FSU was rained out after
Carolina watched a 4-0 lead turn into a 7-5
defeat.
THE Seminoles appeared to score first in
the game. Mike Fuentas was on first base

Thaw booted the ball, then threw it by first
baseman Jim Curl. The ball hit a
photographer stationed behind first base
against the fence, and the first base umpire
allowed Fuentas to score and Ledbetter to
advance to second base.
But after conferring with Raines, the ,
umpires met and changed their ruling,
sending Fuentas back to third and taking ,

the game, but dropped the protest after they ]
won the game. I
The Gamecocks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the
bottom of the first inning when Curl drove in ,
Joe McCarthy with a sacrifice fly. (
Singles by McCarthy and Thaw, followed
by doubles by Rod Carraway and Hollins
gave the Gamecocks three runs in the third
inning to give USC a 4-0 lead.
Gamecock starting pitcher Eton Gordon
was shaky through the first six innings,
setting the side down in order only once, but
