one hospital and one law firm. Some,, however, are
broadening their scopes. "The Young and the Restless" has
one bar, Jonas' Place and has recently added a new night

Next, there is the family. Every show has one.They would
go through thick and thin for one another, and they are
suDDOsed to reDresent evervthina ennrl about Am??rir*ii truth
justice, and joint checking accounts. On "As the World
Turns" there are the Stewarts, and on "Days of Our Lives" it
is the Horton clan. The difference? Sex. On both, the
patriarch is a doctor and he is married to a fine, loving
woman who understands her husband's dedication to
medicine requires him to spend long hours helping mankind.
But the Stewarts have daughters, whereas the Hortons have
sons. There are also the Aldriches on "The Doctors and the
Bauers on "The Guiding Light," both full of doctors, nurses, |
and various volunteers. Between the lot of them, they rattle j
off the Hippocratic Oath the way vou and I order ham
burgers. '

him and he looked at her, she smiled at him and he raped her,
and then on it was true love. They are countered by kids
ranging from pre-pubescent to college age on every network.
"The Doctors" has featured the menage a trois of Darcy,
Alan, and Brad. "The Edge of Night" has teen-aged murder
suspects, and "All My Children" features young Devon
McFadden, whose little daughter would be better cared for if
leu 10 wandering gypsy cnild abusers.
The older, more established facet of the soap is The Villain.
The Villain is not limited by sex or age. The Villian is
dishonest, unconvinced, unprincipled, corrup, insidious, and
highly questionable. On "All My Children" The Villian since
the beginning was Phobe Tyler, now Wallingford. She was
coniving, outspoken, belligerant, and a general aged pain in
the neck. She is now receiving her iust dpssprt* nt th*> hanHc
of her new husband, "Professor" Langley Wallingrord, a
swindling con man. Also included among the ranks of the
soap opera bad guy is Michael Pavel, lover of Rae Woodard
and her daughter, Kim Beaulac. He is the tube's answer to
"The American Gigalo," using his fine-tuned bod to get what
le wants out of life. He is not much better that "Days of Our
Lives'" Alex Marshall, wife raper and father to the child of a
lun.
I'm sure that now, even though there is plenty of evidence
