William ivydii, OV_< a 1901
Phi Beta Kappa Visiting
Scholar of the Year, spoke
Thursday at USC on the
Titanic search, which began
July 30> 1980, in a 500-mile
area of the North Atlantic
Ocean.
"The Titanic sank in an
unknown area," Ryan said.
"There were conflicting
reports as to where it sank.
The area we had to search is
larger than the state of
nnoue lsiana, ana witn an
that against us, we only had
20 days to search for it."
More than 1,400 people
died after the Titanic
crashed into an iceberg, and
the ocean liner now rests two
miles below the surface,

Ryan said. He called the
wreck "one of the world's
greatest maritime
disasters."
RYAN'S search for the
Titanic was financed by
several Texas independent
oil businessmen, who sup
ported the project as an
"adventure," Ryan said.
A ship was bought April 14
and equipped with
sophisticated geophysical
machinery, according to
Ryan. He said the crew had
three months to install
computers and weld
equipment onto the vessel.
Ryan and other members
of the search team built a
special vehicle equipped
with Sonar and cameras that
could be lowered by cable to
depths near the sea floor.
Using a technique called
"slit-acoustics imaging,"
the vehicle's acoustic
camera searched for the
Titanic's shadow on the
ocean floor.
