Holderman tried
to turn interview
into giant hoax
in neated White House press conference questioning during,
the Nixon administration, Press Secretary Ron Ziegler knew
that he could call on one White House press corps reporter
who could be counted on to shift the questioning away from
matters Nixon wished to avoid.
Apparently USC President James Holderman tried to use a
similar tactic to avoid difficult Questions h?? fparpH
might call in with during an interview broadcast live on
WUSC-FM Wednesday night.
Holderman was so paranoid about the 90-minute interview
with WUSC News Director Byran Glazer that his assistant,
Steve Beckham, asked Student Alumni Association
representative Sharmin Barnes to try to fix questioning
during the one-hour segment of the interview alloted for callin
questions from students. Beckham asked Barnes to get
SAA members to call in with favorable questions that would

at Carolina.
Holderman's attempt to manipulate the interview is unforgivable.
If he was so afraid of what Glazer might ask
during his 30-minute one-on-one interview or what students
would ask when given a chance to call in with their gripes,
then he never should have gone on the air.
Holderman's plan had one flaw. Unlike Ziegler, Holderman
was not in control of screening questions called in by
students. While some verv nositivp nupsllnnu HiH malro if r??
the air, so did several unfavorable ones. In the end, he had to
deal with both types.
Holderman's behind the scenes actions to try to stack the
questions are deplorable. For a president who prides
himself dn honesty and openess, his actions seem to be quite
a paradox.

non-Greek viewpoint. I, too, have been witnessing this
- 4'heated" issue concerning the Greeks and, personally, I'm
sick of the childish and immature behavior of the said
organizations.
I'm not at all affected by the way Greeks dress or, for that
matter, the cynical way in which they converse. However, I
am bothered by the way these children present themselves as
though they are part of some "upper-echelon" or a higher
"southern aristocracy" of which a member is placed
"above" other university "peasants."
Personally, I find absolutely no justification for these
raised opinions and find in almost all cases that the exact
opposite holds true.
IN ORDER for these Greeks to be as prominent as they
would like to appear, it would seem most logical that their
parents are in, or near, the upper-middle class bracket.
Therefore, they themselves have not obtained this level if

Just as it is far easier for an intelligent person to act stupid
than it is for a stupid person to act intelligent, the same
philosophy holds that it is easier for a prominent person to
lower himself than it is for a lower person (are you still

As for other colleges in the U.S. with this Greek problem,
where Ms. Chaplin have you obtained a basis for your
hypothesis? Many universities and colleges in the U.S. have
this same division. For example, the University of Georgia in
Athens, UNC, the College of Charleston, University of
Alabama, University of Tennessee, and the University of
Notre Dame alt have the same division of interns th*t thi?
