USC's men's golf squad placed
(sixth in both the Furman InKercollegiate
and Pinehurst InJvitational
tournaments over the
I spring holiday.
The golfing Gamecocks tallied 873
points to finish nine strokes behind
Tennessee's winning 864 at the
Furman tourney. Wake Forest placed
second with an 868 combination
followed by Alabama and Clemson
tied for third, Georgia and USC.
"The Furman tournament was by
far the best we have played all year,"
USC Head Golf Coach Bobby Foster
observed. "Losing to Tennessee by
nine shots is not a whole lot for a
three-day tournament."
Foster added that the tourney's
field of 27 "was the best field we've
faced in two or three years."
Joey Graham's 216 total paced the
Gamecocks individually and claimed
|12th-placed honors for the large field.
Steve Liebler and George MacDonald

lead Florida State to the tournament
title.
"Liebler and MacDonald had fine
first rounds (71 and 73, respectively)
but nobody else helped them," Foster
said. "The second day of the tournament
was the eighth day in a row
we had played in competition, and
that may have been too much.
"We now have a two-week break
before our next tournament, so we can
get in some serious practice," Foster
said. "We have three more tournaments
remaining and we need to
play well in them to better our
chances of getting an NCAA tournament
bid."

second-place finish at the Duke Spring
Invitational, and placed eighth at the
Lady Paladin tournament.
The Lady Gamecocks carded a
three-day total of 972, compared to
North Carolina's winning 965, in the
Duke tourney. USC led the i8-team
field for two rounds, taking a fivestroke
advantage over UNC into the
final day.
Robin Abare put together a 236 total
to tie for third individually.
"The fact that our number-five
player Julie Loebs led the tournament
with an opening-day 73 shows that
we've got a lot of depth for a firstyear,"
Foster commented.
Carolina managed a 929 tally to tie
for eighth in the Furman event.

"Our first and third rounds were
excellent, yet our second round was
fair," Foster recalled. "But six out of
Golf World Magazine's top 10 teams
competed in the tournament, so
finishing eighth is not bad at all."
