Profe By Teresa K. Weaver New* Editor A USC math professor filed a federal lawsuit Monday accusing Richland County Coroner Frank Barron of cheating him in a land investment deal. Dr. Herman E. Scheiblich filed a suit accusing Barron, a private businessman, of failing to honor an investment venture agreement called Horrell Hill Partnership Inc. Scheiblich alleges he has lost $20,000 since his initial investment of $3,750 in 1975. According to the complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court, Scheiblich charges that Barron, acting | as managing partner of Barron Investment j Dr?ArvAtiK/\n J a iupci uca, uacu utxcpuuil i to persuade him to buy more than 60 acres to be developed in the Horrell Hill area near Eastover. i The suit states that Barron failed to "diligently work to accomplish the objective of the enterprise" to generate substantial profits for himself as promoter and for the participants, Scheiblich declined to comment on the suit. His attorney, J. Leeds Barroll, said he was limited in what he could say because the case was a business conflict between two individuals. According to Barron, Scheiblich and three local physicians entered into the investment venture with him six years ago. Referring to the USC professor as a "cry baby," Barron said any discrepancies in the deal should have been brought up when the land was bought. He threatened me with extortion if I didn't buy him out." Barron accused 5th Circuit Solicitor James C. Anders of instigating the suit. Barron said Anders made claims last year that the coroner had cheated him in a coastal land investment deal. Barron said there was a meeting Thursday between Anders and Barroll in which they "conspired" to defame the coroner's character. "Scheiblich approached two prominent law firms earlier about the case, and neither would have anything to do with it," Barron said. "So he hired a nut that actually solicits business." THE SUIT is "just another subtle way of defaming my character," Barron said. Anders and Barroll both denied Barron's accusations about the solicitor's involvement in the lawsuit. "I never met the professor," Anders said. "The accusation is totally untrue," Barroll said. "I hardly know Anders, and Dr. Scheiblich has never met u: ?? nun. Barroll said the accusations were part, of an ongoing political battle between the solicitor and the coroner. "Barron is just trying to make it political." "I'm a Democrat and he's a Republican," Anders said. "I have nothing personal against the boy. He's young and inexperienced, but he'll 1 i learn.
