Senate
to fund
dance
By Lana Carter
Staff Writer
Student Senate passed a
bill Wednesday allocating
$2,000 for this year's
graduation ball, knocking
down an amendment to the
bill that would abolish tho
dance and re-allocate the
money to Russell House's
Contemporary Sounds
Committee.
The amendment was
proposed after Contempory
Sounds appealed to the
Senate Finance Committee
for Student Government
funds for the spring outdoor
concert, according to Jeff
Floyd, Student Senate
president.
The amendment would
have re-appropriated the
$2,000 allocated for the ball
to the spring concert.
Floyd said the ball was not
a success last year and that
little time is left to organize
this year's ball. He said
Student Government could
provide better service to
students by getting involved
in the outdoor concert.
GEORGE Mineff, a
member of the Graduation
Ball Committee, said,
"When it (the ball) was
started, we were trying to
begin a tradition. If we don't
go through with the ball this
year, the whole idea will die"
The ball has a proposed
$2,600 budget with $600 expected
from ticket sales.
Expenses include $1,200 for
the band, $500 for food, $400

publicity, $100 for technical
services and $100 for
miscellaneous expenses.
In other business, the
senate passed a bill
providing for succession of a
Student Government
secretary or treasurer if the
office becomes vacant
before the term expires
A bill updating part of the
code for the Executive and
Legislative Liaison Committee
was also passed.
The Residence Life
Committee reported that
engraving tools will be
available for student use
Monday. The engravers are
part of a campaign by i
Student Government,
Campus Police and the
Residence Life Committee to
combat campus theft.
In final actions, the senate
approved 16 students for
committee positions.
