Spopts UBS Carolina 1 i iuvvaiu By Richard Meyers Sports Editor Carolina's baseball team opened a seven game home stand Thursday afternoon in. ^winning fashion, taking a 13-8 victory over *the Howard Bisons. The Gamecocks upped their season record to 7-3, while the Bisons fell to 0-3. Carolina trailed 2-0 after one half inning of play, but came back to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on a Jim Curl homer. HOWARD LEAD by scores of 5-2 and 6-4 through the early goings, but couldn't hold them USC totaled 13 runs on 12 hits and committed three errors. Howard scored their eight runs on 13 hits while tallying three errors. Senior pitcher Eddie Leopard picked up the win in the three hour, 15-minute contest. Leopard relieved starting pitcher Mark Calvert in the second inning after Calvert gave up seven runs, although he was only charged with one earned run. Howard pitcher Tommie Ambrose went the distance for the Bisons, throwing 170 pitches in eight innings, while giving up 13 runt? A 14 AIO . Second baseman Jamey Thaw and third baseman Rod Carraway added home runs for the Gamecocks, who won their third game in a row. The Gamecocks collected 25 base hits, smashing the old USC mark by four, and scored in every inning except the seventh. Carolina tied a national record with ten doubles in one game, including three by Thaw, which tied a team record. Senior left-hander Bret Baynham picked up his second win of the season in as many decisions, allowing seven hits, striking out six and allowing two runs. Southpaw Martin Small relieved Baynham in the seventh, allowing five hits and no runs in three innings on the mound to qualify for his first save of the season. THE GAMECOCKS sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, scoring nine times. Ten of those batters reached consecutively to set another team record. The Gamecocks scored twice in the second, three times in the third, twice in the fourth, three times in the fifth, once in the sixth, three times in the eighth, and added a Jone tally in the ninth. Curl had four hits in seven at-bats, scoring three runs and knocking in two. Designated hitter Paul Hollins had four hits in as many at-bats, driving in five runs while tallying two.
