Skills Centc
USC's Academic Skills Center offers free
short courses and one-on-one academic
counseling to help students learn how to
study better and manage time more wisely.
The following is a list of questions
the academic counselors frequently
encounter from students.
Q All my courses are lecture courses. I
can't write as fast as the professor
talks. What should I do?
A:Good listening and note taking skills
can help you. Here are a few
suggestions.
1. Come to class prepared. Pre-read
assignments just before class, and
keep your text open in class for
referral.
2. Ask yourself what the lecture is
really getting at, and structure your
notes accordingly.
3. Don't try to write every word.
Abbreviate and put what you hear in
your own words whenever possible.
4. Find out about the Cornell method
of notetaking from ASC.
5. Edit your notes after each lecture.
6. Compare your notes with a
classmate's on a regular basis to fill
in the gaps and for review.
7. If you don't understand a Doint or
need something repeated, don't
hesitate to ask the lecturer for
clarification.
8. Pay particular attention to the

twenty hours per week. I don't have
time to study. I don't have any fun. Is
college supposed to be this hard?
A:No, but college is hard work. Set
priorities in your life and manage
your time according to these
priorities. If you're dissatisfied with
your limited social life, consider
working less or taking fewer credits.
If you don't want to stop working and
still want to remain a full time
student, then be prepared to sacrifice
time for socializing. The trick is to
achieve a balance in your life. Try to
mix work, education, exercise,
socializing and other activities in your
routine. Make the time for these
activities by practicing good time
management techniques. A full life
leaves no time to waste.
Q: I have been a student now for two
years. My studying is OK, but my
reading is really slowing me down. Is
there some way I can improve my
reading speed so that it doesn't take a
lot of time just to get through one
chapter of a book?
A*. The answer is a qualified yes. Some
material is simply hard to grasp and

must be read slowly, because reading
is a thinking process and some
materials require a lot of thinking.
However, for most material you can

speed. Here are a few time proven
techniques you might want to try.
1.Take a 3 by 5 index card and use it as a
pacer. As you read, cover up
previously read words. Push yourself,
don't pull, feel a slight bit rushed as
you read. Most people find that the
first time they try this procedure they
increase their reading speed by at
least ten percent, without any loss in
understanding. After just a couple
weeks of doing this consistently they
find they have doubled their speed.
2. Another- echnique is to look over the
reading briefly before doing a more
comprehensive reading. This preview
will prepare you for the more comprehensive
reading by making you
aware of the chapter's organization
and possibly the topic (which
you can skip or read lightly) or difficult
spots in the chapter. Again, the
research shows that this will help you
increase your reading speed.
There are a lot of other techniques you
can try as well. Stop by ASC for more
tips and techniques.

me. I say that when you study it's Oiv |
to have music on if its turned down lil
low. My roommate says that it's bad for JjN
your studying to have any music on at I\
all, even if it's soft cassical music.
What is the advice you would give to ' 1
someone who wants to get some
studying done? ^
A: I think you both might be right, you
have heard the old saying, "Music
calms the savage beast"? That saying
may have some rekvance here.
Research shows that if a person is
somewhat relaxed (the amount differs
for each person) they can learn
more rapidly Music does relax many
people. However, other studies show
that music, especially vocal or rock,
will hinder learning. So, you might
ask, who is right, my roomate or me?
We recommend that you experiment
with yourself. Pick some relaxing
instumental music. Turn it on low, so
as not to interfere with your attention
(remember you can do only one thing
at a time ), and see if your study
power is negatively affected. You
may find that it is (then your roomate
is right*, or you may find otherwise
(then you're right. Good luck with f
