USC honored former university President Donald L.
Russell Wednesday with a special ceremony and portrait
unveiling in the Russell House.
Portraits of Russell and his wife, Virginia, were unveiled
by USC President James B. Holderman and Board of
Trustees members in the second floor lobby of Russell House,
the building named in the Russells' honor.
Russell's presidency, which lasted from 1952 to 1957, was
called the "Russell Renaissance" by board Chairman R.
Markley Dennis because of the many capital improvement
yi vjcvia started on campus during those years.
CONSTRUCTION on the Russell House was begun during
the Russell presidency, and the building opened in 1955. The
facility has been enlarged three times, in 1958, 1967 and 1976.
The last addition included the second floor lobby where the
Russell portraits will hang. The portraits were painted by
Robert Bruce Williams of Washington, D.C.

?James B. Ho/derman
In dedication ceremonies, Dennis said Russell's administration
as USC's 2ist president "started the university
in the right direction."
Holderman said the portraits are "a way of giving the
Russells immortality on the USC campus.
"IT'S VERY difficult to achieve immortality, but this
couple has, in more ways than I could count, achieved it,"
Molderman said. "But what's mnrp imnnrfnnt ic tho rtif
.eriince they have made in all our lives. We're touched every
day by something they did."
Russell spoke briefly at the ceremony, saying he still has
very special feelings about the university.
"I don't know of anywhere I'd rather have my portrait
hang," Russell said. "There is nowhere other than my home
that is dearer to my heart."
