The instant Joan Jett
stepped on stage Thursday
night at Green Streets, one

couiu sense ner vitality and
magnetism even before she
played her first cord and
sang her first note.
From the opening tune, the
ex-Runaway and her three
counterparts dazzled a
captivated audience with
their unique rocking,
punking sound a la Pat
Benetar and Devo.
THE STANDING-ROOMONLY
crowd, to say the

teasi, was a potpourri OI
extremes. Avid punkrockers,
attired with their
individualistic fashion, hair
styles, and dance, were
present, as well as rowdy
rock-n-rollers and a few laidback
listeners.
In our day of segmented
musical tastes, it is quite an
accomplishment to be able*
to attract such a diverse
mixture of onlookers. With
her "jet black" locks, (no
pun intended) black satin
pants, black Converse tennis
anH o m/infh full nf
chewing gum, Joan Jett was
a sexy vision of energy on
stage.
She opened and ended the
performance with a footstomping
rocker entitled
"Bad Reputation", which

had her fellow musicians,

with "You Don't Know What
You've Got" and "Make

allowed the lead singer to
express her versatility.
CONTINUING THEIR
apparent favoritism towards
love and sex-related songs,
the band entertained the
crowd with "You're Too
Possessive," "Do You Want
to Touch Me There," and
"Teenage Sex Machine,"
perhaps the favorite of the
evening. Jett played several
Runaway songs including
"Wait for Me," as well as an
unreleased single, "You
Don't Own Me," which will
be on the group's forthcoming
second album.
The Black Hearts returned
after two lengthy sets with
one encore, "Shout," a song
popularized by the classic
Animal House flick. The
spectators who stayed
around for the entire show
were especially appreciative
but understandably
exhausted after a long night
of partying.

Black Heart's performance
Thursday was no ordinary
night club show. In addition
to a musically sound Jwohour
jam session, they added
a sometimes forgotten but
vitally important element in
their act. They had fun
playing fun music and they
played live music as it
should be played, not like a
ditto studio recording.
The backup group, the ;
John Brannen Band, was a '
dismal display in contrast to ;
Jett. The crowd made vocal <

toward the finish of the
backup band's spiritless set.
The only disturbing aspect
of the Blackheart's music
was that many of their tunes
followed an unchanging,
almost mechanical rhythmic
pattern. This, in part, is
what lead to the
deterioration of the allfemale
Runaways band.
FOR A SPIRITED, 21year-old
rocker who says she
"doesn't give a damn about
a reputation," Joan Jett
certainly seems to be doing
ner best to build a good one.
