hostages had left Iranian air space
and that all were "alive and well and
free."
In an emotional homecoming
speech in which his voice broke at
several points, the former president
expressed joy that the hostages had
been freed and deep gratitude to the
Algerian envoys who acted as the gobetween
in negotiations for their
freedom.
"It is impossible for me to realize,
or any of us, how they feel on that
plane because they recognize that
they are hostages no more," Carter
told several thousand well-wishers
gathered in Plains for a welcome
home celebration. "They are
prisoners no more and they are
coming back to this land that we all
love."
The Algerians for the last few weeks
have been real heroes," he said.
"They have literally worked day and
night, from their president, their
foreign minister, the president of
their national bank and others to try
to gain the freedom of the American
hostages.
"I'd like to express my personal,
and also my political, official and
public thanks to the people of
Algeria," he said.
Carter said he planned to fly to
Germany to greet the hostages. He
said he already had dispatched former
Secretary of Slate Cyrus Vance
to be on hand when the hostages step

American officials, foreign governments
and the American people for
their unity during the 14-month crisis.
"Throughout this time of trial, we
Americans have stood as one, united
in our prayers, steadfast in our
concern for our fellow Americans in
peril," he said, adding that he doubted
more prayers ever had been offered
for Americans in danger abroad.
Carter also expressed joy that the
hostages freedom was secured on
terms that "will always preserve the
honor and the dignity and the best
interests of our nation."

The former president said he was
grateful for the welcome he received
in Plains, where a sea of several
thousand well-wishers were on hand
for his triumphant return home.
Carter said coming back to Georgia
is "a happy experience for me and I
thank God for it."
Darkness at the Tehran airport
caused a one day late delay in the
hostages' departure, due to blackout
conditions imposed as a result of
Iran's war with Iraq. Runway lights
were eventually turned on for the
flight from captivity.
Working overnight Monday in the
Oval Office with Vice President
Walter F. Mondale and two longtime
confidants, Charles * Kirbo and
Hamilton Jordan, Carter bartered
final contract terms Tuesday and then
ordered the return of Iran's frozen
assets - triggering the hostages'
release after 444 days' of agonizing
imprisonment.
"The hostages are now ready to fly,"
Iran's chief negotiator then said.

Washington, including former

departed for Wiesbaden from
Washington to handle the first official
reception.
It was shortly after 3 a.m. EST
when Iran and the United States
resolved an 11-hour disagreement
that delayed the hostages' freedom
onk more day. Immediately, Carter
set in motion the transfer of billions of
dollars of Iranian assets.
The assets, frozen by Carter
following the Nov. 4, 1979 hostagetaking,
were shifted into an escrow
account in London for return to
Tehran. This was the last step
required of Carter for the hostages'
release,
"At 6:47 this morning, the president
was notified by Secretary of the
Treasury William Miller that the
frozen Iranian assets had been
transferred to the escrow account of
the Algerian Central Bank at the Bank
of England," Powell said Tuesday.
"This step completely fulfills all steps
agreed to by the United States prior to
the release of the hostages."
All that remained was for Algerian
intermediaries to officially notify
Iran, Powell said. That was accomplished
at 8:17 a.m. EST, according
to Powell.
