Ali have spoken to South
Carolina boxing officials
about possibly scheduling a
fight in Columbia between
Ali and John Gardner, the
heavyweight champion of
Britain.
Frank McGuire Arena
would be the most probable
sight for the event,
Hitopoulos said. He said
Coliseum officials have
agreed to let a fight be held
there.
The chairman also said the
fight would be held "close to
April. They want to have it
as soon as they can," he
said.
A medical check up could
bar the fight however. "As

OK," Hitopoulos said.

The tournament, sponsored
by the USC Squash
Club, was open to any
resident of South Carolina.
The single elimination event
was divided into three skill
level divisions, A, B and C.
Gary Donaldson, a grad
student at Carolina, finished
first in the "B" category
while Don Potter, also a grad
student, placed third.
John O'Neil, an art
professor, finished third in
the "C" division.
Capturing the state
championship with a
number one finish in the "A"
division was Ferez Nallaseth
while Richard Orr, and John
Simon rounded out the top
three.

suffered a life-threatening

Richard collapsed on the
floor of the Astrodome July
30 and underwent surgery to
remove a blood clot in his
neck. On Oct. 18, Richard
had a blocked artery in his
right shoulder replaced
during an 18-hour operation.
Monday the Astros announced
that Richard had
been cleared to proceed with
full pre-spring training
workouts and will begin
throwing shortly.
