in a dual meet to North
Carolina Saturday. The Tar
Heel women won 86-55 and
the men pulled out a 66-47
victory.
Overall, Gamecock swimmers
set 4 new school
records and reached the
NCAA qualifying times in six
different events. Coach
Steve Collins was disappointed
about the loss, but
said the times showed that
the teams are improving.
"We are basically a long
distance team and were hurt
in the shorts, but we did win
all our long events," Collins
said. Last year we swam the
long order at North Carolina
and won, this year they
swam right up to their
capabilities and won."

with a new school record of
1:52.0 in the 200 yard
backstroke, only 4/10 of a
second off the NCAA
qualifying time. The men's
400 medley relay team of
Bedford, Steve Sprule, Rick
Sawicki and E.J. Mercer
qualified in NCAA time,
recording the tenth fastest
time in the country (3:27.0).
Sprule also recorded his
best time of the year in the
200 yard breaststroke. Bill
Humby, a senior from
Canada pulled out a tough
double winning both the 1000
yard(9:31) and 200 yard
butterfly (1:54).
Judy DeSando and Colleen
Collins paced the Lady
Gamecocks with new school
records in the 200 Individual
Medley (2:06.0) and the 500
yard freestyle (4:56.5). Both
were NCAA qualifying
times, as was Val Mee's in
the 200 yard freestyle
(1:52.1).

Both teams travel to
Florida State next Saturday
where they must face
the harshness of an outdoor
pool. Collins expects the
meet to be tough because of
the conditions. "The weather
will be a major factor
because we are not used to
it," he said.
South Carolina's women
lost to Florida State last
year, who had an excellent
year recruiting and have
several nationally ranked
swimmers. The Lady

Sunday to face a very tough
Texas team, who have
