Bama's I By Herschel Nissenson A.P. Sport* Writer TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? The only person connected with Alabama football who isn't outwardly excited about Saturday's longawaited clash with Notre Dame in Birmingham is Coach Bear Bryant. "Notre Dame is without doubt the biggest name in football and I'm happy to be playing them in Alabama," Rri7Qn# OrtirJ 1 ui JHIII oaiu YYt'UIICSUHy. "From a national standpoint I'd rather beat them, but locally I'd rather beat Auburn. "I don't think AlabamaNotre Dame will be as important as the Auburn game, but that' what people think, the people who buy tickets and write about it. A eon lerence game is more im- i portant to us than an in- ? lersectional game." Bryant is probably the only one in these parts who teels that way. Notre Dame sticks in Alabama's craw like a blocked punt. In 1966. despite a 10-10 tie with Michigan State. "I lost that first game two or three different times," Bryant said. "Either team could have won the second game, loo. even though neither team played like Alabama and Notre Dame usually play. I blew that one, too." The only other head-tohead confrontation took place in 1976. with Notre iViniii ? wcjiiiv wiiiuiii^ zi-io in noum Bend. "The fans certainly let you know about it," said running back Major Ogilvie. "We know that Notre Dame cost Alabama about three national cnampionships in a period of five years.
