MONDAY, OCT. 27 ? A bathroom window in a McBryde
\ quadrangle building was reported broken. A black, metal,
\ upholstered chair and a glass ashtray were stolen from
the payroll department in the Administration Annex.
Staff members reported various items stolen from
rooms in the Personnel Annex. An electric tvDewriter was
stolen from a staff member's office in the Coker Life
Sciences building. A locked bicycle was stolen from a rack
at Sloan College.
TUESDAY, OCT. 28 ? Two female students were
arrested at Sumter and Blossom streets after a security
officer in the Blossom Street Parking Garage reported
observing them breaking radio antennas and windshield
wipers on parked cars.
Holes were punched through windows in the Zeta Beta
Tau fraternity lounge. A skeleton was removed from a
Booker T. Washington classroom. A toolbox was stolen
from a car parked in a Sumter Street lot after the thief
pried open the trunk.
! A bicycle locked to a pipe was stolen from Hamilton
College. A battery was removed from a car in the Blossom
Street Garage after the thief broke the right front window
[ and pulled the hood latch. A non-student's cassette
| I recorder was stolen from the backstage area in the
I Golden Spur before his performance there.
USC, Clemson reft

(JSC students will not receive money from federally funded
I State Student Incentive Grants because the program's acr
counting procedures are too complex, according to USC
Financial Aid Director John Bannister.
USC, Clemson University and other state-supported
1 colleges have decided not to receive State Student Incentive
I Grants funds through the S.C. Tuition Grants Agency
because of the procedures.
S.C. colleges and universities received $859,543 in federal
aid for the 1980-81 academic year. That amount was matched
by state funds. This money is distributed through the S.C.
i Tuition Grants Agency.
THE S.C. TUITION Grants Agency was formed in 1973 to
provide tuition grants for students in private colleges,
f, Bannister said. It was formed with the concept that providing
direct grants to students in private colleges is cheaper than
building new institutions.
In 1979, a state law was passed requiring the grant agency
to allocate part of its funds to state-supported colleges.
Bannister said students can receive as much as $2,000
toward private-college tuition. But the grant is not matched

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 29 ? Two male non-students were
arrested for trespassing after a student called Campus
Police to get the non-students out of his dorm room. A
plate glass window in the Residential Life Services
building was smashed.
Two pictures were taken from the Student Government
office in the Russell House. A control valve regulator was
removed from the basement of Preston dorm. A battery
was removed from a car parked in the Blossom Street
Garage.
An antenna was ripped from a car parked in the 700
block of Bull Street. A staff member in the Thomas Cooper
Library caught a juvenile attempting to steal a book when

electronic detection system.
THURSDAY, OCT. 30 ? The convertible top, the seats
and trunk lid were stripped from a car parked near the
commissary. A car's ignition switch was damaged while
the vehicle was parked in front of an apartment on Marion
Street.
A wallet was stolen from a purse in an Administration
Building room and was found later in a trash can. Two
other purses were stolen, one from Lieber College and one
from the ground near Sumter Street.
FRIDAY, OCT. 31 ? A male non-student was

through the agency, the money must be matched by the
university.
Bannister said USC is not participating in the grant
program because of the complex formula used to calculate
the grant a student can get and the costly accounting
procedure that accompanies it.
Bannister said the agency is a "source of much irritation,"

TUITION GRANT Agency Eddie Shannon said all schools
have the option of choosing to participate and that the
allocation of funds between the public and private colleges is
as fair as possible. In 1980, all 19 private colleges and four
state-supported schools in S.C. participated.

Humanities office building. A car was stolen from David
Field and was recovered later by Campus Police.
SATURDAY, NOV. 1 ? A female student was arrested
for driving under the influence when she was observed i
driving left of the center line on Pendleton and Bull
streets. When she arrived at the police department, she
tried to break the Breathalyzer machine and was arrested
for disorderly conduct.
A motorcycle was stolen from a Bates House lot. The I
right front wheel was removed from a car parked near the
band building. Personal property was taken from a lounge
in the School of Engineering. |
The fire system in Bates House was damaged. A false j
fire alarm was reported in LaBorde dorm
