But for anyone who needs help and doesn't meet those agencies' requirements, there's Providence Home. The Providence Home io uiuc lu 51VC Uiciu dUUUlCI" option and another chance." The home, located at 3425 N. Main St. in Columbia, was founded 18 years ago by John Zenoni, its executive director. Zenoni organized three shelters, two for men and one for women. The first shelter was for men only. usually street alcoholics. But with recent awareness about battered women, there is increasing realization that just as many women as men are in crisis situations. THE HOME is holding a fund-raising Thanksgiving supper from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Dreher High School cafeteria. The supper has been named "A Thanksgiving Souper," and supporters hope it will become an annual event. The supper will consist of soup and bread, not a feast, but a re-creation of the meal that many poor Columbians will eat at Thanksgiving. This supper is only one part of what Sister Kathy calls "intro to the streets". "IT IS EASY for us to say the conditions in the mental hospital are OK, or that there are not people actually sleeping in alleys or on park benches if we never go see for ourselves," Sister Kathy said. "But there are people who sleep on benches and live at tne bus station right here in the Columbia community." The Providence Home receives no federal or state funds and is entirely dependent on donations. There is one other women's shelter in South Carolina, but it is for battered women only. Providence Home is open to any man or woman who needs help. Many who come may be just out of prison and ?u v nuvriicic tu auty Willie finding a job. Many have run away from abuse, but have nowhere to go. Teenagers from foster homes come when conditions in the foster homes are unbearable. Sometimes state agencies send people to the home. SISTER KATHY and another nun are in charge of the home, which is open 24 hours a day. Both men and women have rules to follow, but the rules are very flexible. Their suuroundings reflect how they feel about themselves, she said, and run-down surroundings would only enforce a sense of worthlessness. 44 When seemingly there are no options, we try to create viable options," Sister Kathy said. Sister Kathy said one young woman who came to j the home had been abused j throughout childhood. In herteens she became a prostitute and found someone who she thought cared for her. She became pregnant and was soon abused by this person. She was forced to im Ko?? ? O- - ? -c baby and came to Providence Home. CHILD ABUSE and economic crimes are involved in the majority of the crisis situations, Sister Kathy said. "Men and women who suffered child abuse and who never had the opportunity to <?et any type of education f& . problems and obstacles that are almost insurmountable. "Street people live in a unique and different world," Sister Kathy said.
