Health care cot deeper into SX By John Vaughan Staff Wilt? USC health care faculty and other state experts have studied the health care system and have noted that costs may increase faster in South Carolina than in other parts of the nation. In the year's first issue of "Business and Economic Review," published by the Division of Research of USC's College of Business Administration, six health care authorities wrote about different aspects of the system at the state and national level. USC professor Richard Furst wrote that the nation spent more than 192.4 billion on health care in 1978. Health planning needs to improve in the state, according to Joseph Sullivan, president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina. According to Sullivan, the major problem in the greater Columbia area, "aside from a need for renovations, is not a shortage of beds, but a shortage of nurses." He wrote that Alex McMahon, president of the American Medical Association, recently said nearly 100,000 more nurses are needed nationwide.
