go, they are indeed unfortunate.
But there are
illegal drugs, killings, rapes,
thefts and all manner of
illegal happenings. That
people continue to perpetrate
them does not mean
that they should be legalized.
For me to give a woman no
choice at all would not be
realistic. She has the choice
to have sex or not. If she
decides in favor of it, she has
the choice of risking
pregnancy or not. If she still
becomes pregnant, she has
the choice to keep the child
or give it up for adoption.
But you speak of a basic
right ? the freedom of
choice. Do we have the
choice to kill, rape, assault,
plunder, vandalize, slander,
burglarize or embezzle?
Choices in life are not
guaranteed ? life isn't like
that ? and the right to
choose life or death for
another is by no means one
of our rights. I'm sure no
woman or man would grant
that right to another if the
life in question were hers or
his.

Punishment now
would be unjust
To the Editor:
If the courts find Phil Ellis guilty of the crime of which
he has been accused, he should be punished by the law and
by the USC Athletic Department.
It is obvious from page 5 of the Oct. 20 issue of the
Gamecock that a number of students are outraged that
Phil Ellis has not been punished by the Athletic Department
for the crime of which he has been accused.
Evidently, a person accused of a crime is guilty until
proven innocent. For the Athletic Department to punish
Ellis now, with the possibility that he might be innocent,
would be an extremely immoral and unjust act. I have
never met Phil Ellis. He might have the disposition of a
nun, or he could be another Charles Manson ? I don't
know. But I do know that the punishment of a man who has
not been declared guilty by the courts is wrong.
It is no wonder that the students who exDressed thoir
opinions on the editorial page Oct. 20 believe Ellis is
guilty. After reading the article on the front page of
Gamecock about the incident, that would be the logical
assumption. The article was almost entirely composed of
quotes by the other party involved in the incident. It is
unfortunate that the writers of this article did not feel it
necessary to get both sides of the story so their readers
might make their decisions based on two different
opinions. In an incident as serious as this, such policy on
the part of the people responsible for the contents of the
