Rare literary works include a biography of Gen. According to Mortimer, the coat of arms on the back cover changed with each wife until after the king's third marriage. The library's rare books range from Babylonian clay tablets (3000 B.C.) to Egyptian papyrus fragments to English medieval manuscripts (A.D. 1450.) Medieval works were hand-printed on vellum, a paper made from animal skin. On several pages the animal's pores can be seen. These older works, which are stored in a climate-controlled vaun, nave an assortment of bindings. One 15th century German manuscript has a fine leather binding with heavy wooden covers marred from being chained to lecterns.
