While increasing oil prices
have been fueling the
nation's energy inflation
rate, Carolina Coliseum has
hppn caving Snnfh farnlina
taxpayers thousands of
dollars annually by reducing
its energy consumption.
The coliseum has reduced
its electricity use from 13
million kilowatt hours in 1973
to 4.25 million kilowatt hours
in fiscal 1979-80, according to
Brian Marks of USC Information
Services.
The savings amounted to
almost $300,000 last year.
The coliseum is an allelectric
building designed
when energy was relatively
inexpensive.
"Among other changes,
the majority of the incandescent
lighting in the
building has been converted
to mercury or fluorescent
lighting," said coliseum
Director Bob Horning Jr.
"Proposals are now being
solicited for replacing some
