To the Editor:
I am highly dissatisfied
with the coverage that our
new Homecoming Queen,
Ms. Brenda Mitchell,
received by this rag of a
newspaper that is called the
Gamecock. Once again, as in
countless other cases, we,
the black students at USC
have been subjected to the
prejudice and
discrimination that apparently
prevails in this
newspaper. This seems to be
an annual thing by this
paper.
As I recall, last year's
Homecoming Queen, Ms.
Sandra Faye Williams (also
black), was also trpatoH in
the same tasteless fashion ?
as if the honor of being
Homecoming Queen and
representing Carolina
means no more than a comic
strip. Yet, the year oefore
last, when Carolina Wilson
(a white girl) won the crown
and title, all hell broke loose
by the Gamecock journalistically
in the form of a
front page spread, complete
with a nice, clear picture of
Ms. Wilson, a bold, vibrant
headline and an article about
her (and an indepth one at
that).

Homecoming Queen is not
treated with the respect that

I think that the staff
currently running the
Gamecock are a bunch of
SORE LOSERS. If you can't
give this lovely lady the kind
of respectful coverage that
she deserves, then maybe in
the future you should con
sider stepping down from
your positions and letting
people run the newspaper
who will do it like true news
people, not like a bunch of
prejudiced, inexperienced
amateurs that YOU on the
Gamecock apparently are.

To the Editor:
The coverage of the
Homecoming '80 festivities
by the Gamecock was insufficient
to say the least. If
you remember correctly, in
the past when a white
candidate won Miss
Homecoming, at least half of
the front page was covered
by her picture. The
remainder of the paper was
plastered with her life's
story from childhood pets to
CIUI ui llj cUlllldllUIl^.
Why didn't Brenda Mitchell,
a very deserving
queen, receive comparable
coverage? By the same
token why didn't any of the
other black Homecoming
Queens receive fair treatment
by the Gamecock? If
you know anything about
baseball...three strikes
you're out! The Garnecock is
OUT!
Another point that concerns
me is that the
students, fans, alumni, etc.

Ellis-Hudson incident (Oct.
15) and the subsequent
editorial page (Oct. 20)
which sufficiently managed
to smear Phillip Ellis' name
in mud. First off, the article
written in last Wednesday's
issue is a completely biased
article which only tells one

this year's queen the
coverage we felt she
deserved. The color of her
skin did not influence our

Concerning the editorials,
I am surprised that so many
Carolina students would
write such damaging letters
all on the basis of one incriminating
article. Hasn't
anyone ever told them not to
believe everything they read
in print? Unfortunately, the
damage they have done to
Phil Ellis' name is
irreparable.
I am not saying that Ellis
was wrong or that he was
right because I was not there
that night and do not have a
reliable source from which 1
