Though I run between the
Hedges and through Death
Valley I have no fear.
You are there with vnur
strength and skill, making
the way clear.
You guide me down wide
paths in search of victory as
you protect me from foes
seeking to harm me..
If George Rogers were a
poet, the above statement
would be a tribute to his
offensive line. In his own
words Rogers says, "This
ain't no one-man show. If
you're gonna write about me
and all those yards, you
gotta write about my team ?
especially my offensive line,
because without them I
couldn't gain a thing."
Seven players compose
this underpublicized and
somewhat unheralded group
who have helped to make
Rogers a prime candidate
for the Heisman Trophy in

Willie Scott, Ben Cornett,
George Schechterly, Chuck
Slaughter, Joe Doyle, Steve
Gettel, and Mark Austin are
the men inside those garnet
jerseys who pick themselves
off the ground as Rogers
breaks loose on yet another
long gain.
"We're aggressive
protectors. We love each
other," stresses senior
guard Steve Gettel. "We've
been through a lot to get here
and none of us want to break
down. You know the guy next
to you is going to bust his
butt," continued the 6-1, 255
pounder from Ormond
Beach, Fla.
GETTEL POINTED out
that preparations such as
weight lifting and film
watching are the unnoticed,
but extremely important
aspects of a successful
Saturday. He is also quick to
credit Coach Carlen for his
shrewd judge of character in
picking personalities that

unit. "Coach Carlen is a
unique individual.
Everything he's told me has
come true," Gettel said.
The team has overcome
much adversity since the
freshman crop of 1977 which
brought four members of the
offensive line to Carolina
according to Gettel. Gettel's

In a rematch of last year's championship game, Kappa
Delta dethroned defending champion Chi Omega 13-0 to win
the women's flag football title.
! Ann Bradford of KD scored two touchdowns on runs of 28
and 25 yards, the second scamper coming with less than two
minutes remaining in the game.
Bradford credited the Chi Omega team. "It was really
fun because we're all friends with Chi ()," she said. She
echoed the thoughts of her teammates in winning the
championship and beating Chi O, saying, "It was a dream
come true."
In the final Women's poll, KD is on top with Chi Omega in
the second spot. South Building and Bates West tied for the
number three spot after each bowed to one of the finalists.

HONORABLE MENTION
AP All American George
Schechterly is the right
offensive tackle. The 6-3, 255
pound native of Berwick,
Pennsylvania, combines
with Gettel to form an imposing
curtain for Gamecock
opponents who try to stop
Rogers on the sweep.
Schechterly is a transfer
from Penn State.
"If you block well enough
for any other back to get four
to seven yards, he (Rogers)
will get eight to ten Yards."
Schechterly doesn't think
the media has overlooked
the offensive line. "When
you have a back like that
(Rogers), people are just
naturally going to look at the
offensive line." Schechterly
pointed out that people in
Columbia who recognize him
often stop and congratulate
him on his effort.
Center Mark Austin says
that he was one of Carolina's
biggest fans while he was
watching older brother
Darrell (now with the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
play for USC. The Union,
S.C. native never considered
playing any place else,
despite growing up in
Clemson's backyard.
The 6-4, 240 pounder also
pointed out team goals are
his own. "We're not out there
for the glory for ourselves,"
said Austin, who splits
playing time with Junior
Handy Teston.
