The Stage Door, at 634
Harden St., has some unique
features making it different
from most other clubs near
campus.
On a given weekend, the
Stage Door may supply
patrons with both acoustic
music and disco music at thp
same time. Acoustic acts
perform on the lower level
near the bar. In the upper
level, bands specializing in
beach or disco music perform,
and when no band is
booked, a DJ spins records.
As well as being a bar and
club, the Stage Door is also a
restaurant, serving a variety
of salads, soups and sandwiches
during lunch and
dinner hours.
In May, the Stage Door
underwent some changes in
architecture and policy. The
lower-level bar, which used
to be off to one side of the
room and semi-enclosed,
was expanded into a large
circular bar. Several large ~
tables were removed from
the center of the room. Also,
the disco on the upper level,
which was a private club

The changes made in May
have not necessarily improved
the Stage Door,
however. While the large
circular bar downstairs has
opened things up a bit, it also

was no designated space for
the performer to set up
equipment or even a chair.
The stage was' simply a
corner of the room. The
former layout was successful,though,
because
there was an area for people
to sit, drink, and watch the
performer at close
proximity.
The few tables which did
orovide a little intimacv
between performer and
audience have now been
replaced by an obtrusive
bar. Performers are now
jammed into the same
corner, but the effect is
much different. The new bar
may reflect a change in .
emphasis at the Stage Door.
With the exception of the
new bar and public disco, the
Stage Door has maintained
its original style. The entrance
to the Stage Door is a
small brick courtyard,

for the interior
style. The restaurant/bar
downstairs is dominated by
me round oar in tne middle
of the room. To the side of
the bar are two levels of
booths, set off by stuccoed
walls, giving each the appearance
of a small
veranda. The upstairs disco
is set up with a central dance
floor surrounded by tables
and the usual multi- colored
flashing lights.
The Stage Door has a quiet
atmosphere, excepting the
disco ,and thier prices are a
little higher than some other
clubs near campus. Their
clientele is best described as
thirtyish, and according to
employees, the Stage Door is
the favorite haunt of many
faculty members.
