Homecoming
lives despite
boycott plans
This week is mid-term, and it seems that just about every
instructor has decided to give his exam right now. Many
students are spending a lot of time in the library (some of
them for the first time this semester). The atmosphere
around campus has gotten a little tense.
In the midst of it all is Homecoming. Yes, in case you
haven't heard, this is Homecoming Week. Even though the
Gamecocks have played at home two weeks in a row, it's still
Homecoming. To get in the spirit you have to use your
imagination a bit and pretend that the football team beat
Michigan just last week and is returning home to face a tough
Cincinnati squad.
It's a shame that so .many students will be tied up studying
for pxams and will miss nnt on nartirinntino in snmn nf fho
events that will be going on this week as part of the
Homecoming festivities. One thing is for sure ? the Greeks
will enjoy the activities. They always seem to find time, or
they make the time to participate. It must be their
"organization."
But it almost wasn't that way in 1980. The Greeks almost

backed out this year in an attempt to ruin Homecoming. But
they thought better of the idea and decided to compromise.
The problem started when the Greek nominee for
Homecoming Queen, Angel Theodore, was not selected as
one of the five finalists by an independent panel set up by the
Homecoming Commission to pick the finalists. The Intrafraternity
Council was so outraged that it apparently
called a meeting to try to decide what drastic actions to take.
Threats of boycotting the parade, the event the Greeks
traditionally dominate, and other dire measures were considered
at the meeting, which the IPC now claims never was
held. In the end, IFC decided to throw their support to Navy
ROTC's candidate Laura Baker in order to save face.

Theodore in the dust. They had to find someone to vote for as
a bloc because, of course, the Greeks c'ould never be split ?
especially on something as crucial as voting for Homecoming
queen.

Theodore, he acted as though he had never heard of her.
When told that Navy KOTC was sponsoring Baker, he said,
"No way ? she is our candidate." It must be very important
to the Greeks to be associated in some way with the winner of
the Homecoming Queen sweepstakes. It's too bad they have
to fee! that way, but at least they didn't pull their support
from the parade, which would have been a childish move.
So the crisis is over, for now, and the Greeks are happy
with their new candidate. Homecoming week can continue on

There are a lot of things going on for all students to take
nart in Viva Las Vegas is tonight in thp Nnssoll Hrmsp
Ballroom. Cockfest is tomorrow night, and an outdoor concert
will be held l?riday. All these events are for students.
