Heisman updi

By Richard Meyers
Assistant Sports Editor
With the mid way point in
the college football season
approaching, the race for the
Heisman Trophy appears to
have narrowed down to five
legitimate candidates.
The players ? Carolina's
George Rogers, Nebraska's
Jarvis Redwine, California's
Rich Campbell, Purdue's
Mark Herrmann, and Ohio
State's Art Schlichter ? are
regarded by most writers as

the trophy.
II the Heismar. were
awarded on statistics alone,
Rogers would be in the
driver's seat right now.
Having another superb
season, the 6-2, 220 pound
tailback has gained 996
yards in six games,
averaging 6.5 yards a carry
and 166 yards per game.
TI1K GAMECOCKS now
stand at 5-1 this year, and
Lire ranked 14th in the latest
UPI poll, which should aid
Rogers in receiving national
attention as the team conf1

The only other running
back with a shot at winning
the Heisman is Redwine of
Nebraska. Redwine has
rushed for 666 yards on 88
carries in four games. He is
averaging 166.5 yards per
game and 7.6 yards per
carry.
But the 6-0, 195 pound
running back was injured in
the Cornhuskers' fourth
game of the season with
Florida State, and he missed
last week's contest with
Kansas. Although the injury
is not believed to be serious,
Redwine may miss some

Of the remaining three
candidates, all are quarterbacks.
California's Campbell is
probably having the best
year of the trio. In five
games, Campbell has
totalled 1,565 yards, completing
142 passes and
producing five touchdowns.

reception. He ranks second
in total offense and fixth in
passing efficiency.
DESPITE HAVING great
individual success, the 6-5,
220 pound senior plays for a
1-4 team, and Heisman
Trophy winners rarely come i
from clubs that have losing i
records.
Herrmann is an a
somewhat similar situation.
Purdue was picked by many I
to challenge for the Big Ten I
championship in pre-season
polls. But the Boilermakers
stand at only 3-2 and have ;
had to struggle most of the
season.
Herrmann has completed 89
of 147 pass attempts, good
for 1,111 yards. Sixty percent
of his passing attempts have
been caught for an average
gain of 12.5 yards. He ranks
fourth in the nation in total
offense but only 21st in
passing efficiency.
Schlichter is a throwing j
quarterback on a running ]
team, which is not helping *
him build Heisman-like ?
statistics to impress voters.

He has not even attempted
enough passes to qualify for

averaging less than 14
passing attempts per game.
Schlichter has completed 38
of 69 passes (55 per cent) for
624 yards, averaging 16.4

He has thrown seven
