Directors of USC's self-study program met Friday to show
faculty members the university 'ss "ong and weak points.
The USC system is evaluated tc accreditation every 10
years as required by the Southern Association of Colleges

presented summaries of findings and recommendations.
Summer school is one of the major academic problems,
according to the report.
THE COMMITTEE recommended that a special committee
be set up to intensively examine the summer school
program. Questions have arisen concerning the effectiveness
of the program because a semester's course work is condensed
into five or six weeks. The committee suggested that
the university schedule one summer session instead of two.

About 60 students attended Tuesday's Student Loan
Borrowers Conference, one of 11 conferences held by the
umce 01 Muaeni financial Aia as a requirement lor au
students receiving university loans.
Students receiving the National Direct Student Loan, the
Nursing Student Loan, or the Health Professions Student
Loan are required to attend one of these conferences.
At the conference, Donald Griggs, program coordinator for
student loans, discussed the terms of the loans and explained
the application process. Griggs also told students about the
new interest rates and grace periods which took effect Oct. 1.
The interest rate increased from 3 percent to 4 percent and
the grace period, the amount of time before payments begin,
changed from nine months to six months.
THE CONFERENCE is designed to ensure that students
understand their loan obligations. In the past many students
did not realize that the money they received was a loan, said
Furman Edmonds of the Student Loan Accounting Office.
Students complete questionnaires and statements of rights
and responsibilities before leaving the conference.
The conferences are presently a university requirement

Concerning Emission policies, the committee suggested a
more "mixed" student body. It also suggested more
academic admission requirements.
The committee recognizes that changes in curriculum are
too slow and the system must be improved. It also recommended
that professors use a variety of teaching metnods,
rather than just lectures.
THE REPORT recommended that USC strengthen
its efforts to raise money through government grants and
contracts and from private groups. The study said the cost

The committee recommended a new discipline system with
changes made in the role of the dean of students.
The self-study summary recommended that classroom
space be used in the most efficient way and that faculty and
student participation in planning for renovations and new

"There has never been a concentrated effort in the past to
ensure that students understood their obligations," he said.
Students are still required to have an exit interview before
graduation with the Student Loan Accounting Office, said
Edmonds. Students are told how much they borrowed, the
interest accumulated, how much their payments will be and
when payments begin.
The remaining conferences are from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.,
Oct 13 and Hand from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 Oct. 14 in Room 153 of
Gambrell Hall.

reviewed every five years by a subcommittee of the graduate
council to check academic quality.
The committee found that Thomas Cooper Library doesn't
have enough money for purchasing books and periodicals,
but it has few other deficiencies. The committee suggested
that the library budget remain at a fixed percentage of the
university budget.
MANY OTHER recommendations were presented in the
sample summary. A complete report will be published later.
The self-study process takes 18 months to complete. The
SACS provides a calendar for the university to follow, and
Wesson said USC is on schedule. The report is due March 1,
1981.
Following the submission of the report, a team of faculty
members from other schools will read the report and conduct
interviews on campus. The team will make recommendations
concerning re-accreditation to the SACS. Results
are expected by April 1981.
