Home runs pov By Tracy Helms Staff Writer Keyed by first-inning home runs by Joe McCarthy and Jim Curl, Carolina's 1981 baseball squad downed their predecessors 6-4 in an alumni game played Saturday. The exhibition contest furnished an early homecoming for some 17 former Gamecock stars dating from USC teams of 1974-80. It offered Coach June Raines' current unit an exciting and educational outing, capping five weeks of fall practice. And even under the informal conditions, the past baseball standouts gave the Gamecocks a fair test. The "old timers" turned back the clock and turned on the scoreboard early, chalking up a run in the game's initial inning. Center fielder Robby Vollmer singled and third baseman Rod Carraway advanced on a fielding error by Boston's Garry Hancock, before Curl drilled his homer to give the Gamecocks a 4-1 margin. For Curl, who belted 12 home runs last spring, and McCarthy, it was business as usual. But alumni pitcher Randy Martz who threw the home run balls was far from regular form. Martz, national collegiate player of the year in 1977, allowed only one homer - to Philadelphia's Mike Schmidt and posted a 2.10 ERA in six games for the Chicago Cubs this fall. He also never lost a game in his Carolina career, compiling a 14-0 record in 1977, his only year as a USC pitcher. That was enough to hold off a two-run alumni rally sparked by Jeff Grantz's run-scoring single in the eighth and an unearned run in the final inning. Eight pitchers saw action for the current Carolina squad, and all responded with respectful showings. Martz, who gave up six runs, seven hits and an error in four innings, absorbed the loss.
