The highlight of the halftime show at
USC's game against Cincinnati will be the
crowning of this year's homecoming queen.
The court, comprised of five finalists, left
Carolina students with a difficult task of
voting for only one contestant. After a long
intervieweing process the finaists were
chosen.
This year's court and their sponsors are:
Laura Baker ? Navy ROTC; Kim Lashway
? Laborde; Brenda Mitchell ? AFRO
Natalie Mincey ? Carolina Band; and
Suzanne Rohner ? International Student
Association.
Laura Baker, a junior journalism major,
is honored to be among the finalists and feels
privileged she is presenting USC in another
way besides cheerleading.
Kim LashWay, also a journalism major is
excited about being a finalist and said "the

The Carolina Band's candidate, Natalie
Mincey is excited to represent the Band.
Natalie sees the band as a special group of
people working together for the betterment
of Carolina.
Suzanne Rohner, a Business Administration
thrilled about participating in
the various homecoming activities.
"Homecoming is a time for people to relive
their memories," she said.
The homecoming court will participate in
various reunions and receptions during the
week.

The annual Alumni Tea Dance is the "big
splash" for the Gamecock Orchestra which 1
has been established since the late 1920's.
Most of the members of the Gamecock '
Orchestra are between 60 and 70 years old, ,
but they remain serious about their appearance
during Homecoming each year.
Mr. Jack Wilson at the Alumni Association
said that the orchestra is the "number one
entertainment at the Tea Dance" and that
"a lot of alumni come just to see them
perform."

once a year, the Tea Dance is important to
them too. Mr. Clarence Taylor, leader and
vocalist for the orchestra, called it a "big
event" and a "camaraderie affair."
Of course the orchestra needs practice
since they're only together once a year so
they have a rehearsal party planned for
October 17 at the Holiday Inn. After dinner,
they will practice for an hour to an hour and
a half.
The Tea Dance is scheduled for October 18
at 4:30 p.m. in the National Guard Armory.
Wilson said that he didn't know why it is
called the Tea Dance because "you couldn't
find a cup of tea there if you wanted one."

Piute Wimberly started the Gamecock
Orchestra in 1929 while he was still in school
at Carolina. Buster Spann took over in 1930.
The orchestra travelled to Europe and has
also played at the Cloister Hotel in Sea
Island, Georgia. The audience liked them so
much in Georgia that what started out as a
two-week engagement turned into a 14 week
stay.
The orchestra also appeared on NBC
television from the stage of the Carolina
Theater in 1936. Many of the members were
legitimate musicians outside the Gamecock
Orchestra. Some played with bands as
popular as Tommy Dorsey.
The Gamecock Orchestra plays mainly
music from the Big Band Era of the '40s and
'50s and has 34 members returning this year
to play at the Tea Dance. The oldest
memoer is ur. uiarence Sanders, a dentist
in Myrtle Beach, who plays the banjo and is
in his mid-70s. One member is coming from
Ohio to play the saxophone.
Taylor said 75 or 80 people have played
actively in the orchestra over the years as
replacements had to be made. He said the
band will have 11 saxophonists, four
trumpeters, four trombonists, two drummers,
two bass players, three guitarists, one
oanjoisi, lour pianists, one temale vocalists
and himself as leader, director, and
vocalist.
