Republican presidential nominee Ronald Reagan was
| greeted by more than 10,000 people Friday at the State House
I in ^oiumoia ? me largesi crowd ever assembled at the
I capitol, according to Sen. Strom Thurmond.
The visit was probably Reagan's last to South Carolina
before the Nov. 4 election.
? Jimmy Carter carried a solid majority in South Carolina
four years ago, but recent polls indicate most of the state's
voters are undecided. Reagan, apparently aware of this
indecision, appealed to democrats and independents by
telling the crowd that longtime S.C. democrat Solomon Blatt
had recently pledged to support the California governor.
"I KNOW I couldn't be addressing a crowd this large if there
weren't some democrats and independents who are as
dissatisfied as the rest of us," Reagan said.
Reagan also addressed economic issues relevant to the
farming and textile industries and attacked President Carter's
treatment of these issues.
"It seems to me that Mr. Carter, who professed to know so
much about the problems of family farmers, has not done
such a good job when it came to instituting policies that
would help them," Reagan said.
"Issues like those concerning farmers and those revolving
around trade issues are critical because our nation is in deep
economic trouble today. These failures have made Mr.
Carter's economic stewardship the principle issue in the
campaign," he said.
REAGAN SAII) Carter's economic policy is the main issue
in the campaign, but he also discussed the problem of controlling
government spending.
Reagan said one of the most effective ways to control
federal spending is to control waste, fraud and abuse. "The

the government's supplies, concluded that more than $100
million is lost every year to fraud and corruption and another
$160 million to waste and mismanagement,'' he said.
Reagan drew the biggest crowd reaction of the afternoon
when he explained why he felt depression was a more appropriate
way to describe the nation's economy, rather than
Carter's term, recession.
"RECESSION IS when your neighbor loses his job.
Depression is when you lose your job. And recovery will be
when Carter loses his jon." Reagan said.
After the speech Reagan headed for a $500-a-plate luncheon
at the home of Colum liareal estate businessman Walter
Keenan. Many in the crowd lingered and gave their impressions
of the appearance.
"I thought he was marvelous," said Florence Makarchuk
of Charlotte, N.C. "The people and enthusiasm here is just
unbelieveable."
"THE MAN offers a sensible and sane choice," said Gian
Sud, a professor of religion at the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte and a naturalized citizen from India. "1
thought he made a good point when he said that inflation is
really caused by government spending."
"I was very impressed," said USC senior Kathy O'Boyle
"Being from Washington, D C., I was really surprised. I've
never seen anything like this before."
"It was a good spectacle, but there wasn't much substance
to the speech," said Mark Lawson, international studies
