beautifully executed romantic fantasy along the lines of the
recent Warren Beatty and Buck Henry "Heaven Can Wait."
In it, Christopher Reeve portrays playwright Richard
Collier. As the film opens, he is enjoying the triumphant
opening night of his first play. As he is being congratulated at
the cast party, an elegant, though extremely elderly, lady
steals up to him. She presses an antique gold pocket watch
into his hand and whispers, "Come back to me." Before
Richard can find out what she's talking about, the lady
disappears into the crowd.
The setting abruptly changes from 1972 to 1980, when

clear his mind, he flees Chicago and drives north, eventually
to Mackinac Island, Michigan.
While strolling through the museum at Mackinac's
magnificent old Grand Hotel, Richard spots a vintage portrait
of a beautiful actress, Elise McKenna (Jane Seymour),
who last performed at the hotel in 1912. He becomes obsessed
by the photograph and travels back in time to meet the lady
whose image haunts him so.

number, will have goose flesh constantly as this dreamy,
idealistic story unfolds. Some people may even need to take a
box of tissue with them, as I heard a great deal of sobbing
toward the end of the screening.
? Richard Matheson has devised an intimate and clever
screenplay, based on his novel "Bid Time Return," that
leaves quite a bit of the story up to the imagination. For inclip

stance, the antique watch that the antique Elise gives
Richard helps him travel back in time, where he leaves the
watch with her. We never know where the watch originally .
came from, however, and that's a nice touch. One is free to
assume either that the watch was heaven-sent or that ]
"Somewhere in Time" is the story of a delightfully vicious I
circle.
In his first leading role since "Superman," Reeve proves
himself to be a versatile, inventive performer, as well as one
of the most handsome leading men currently working. There
are a few moments in which his Clark Kent personality raises
its head, but, for the most part, Reeve's performance is
impeccable.
Seymour's portrayal of Elise is also effective, and the lady
is excruciatingly lovely to look at. it s very easy to understand
why Reeve's character becomes obsessed with her.
For Szwarc, "Somewhere in Time" was obviously a labor
of love. Few directors would have taken the time to see that
every detail was so precise, every shot so perfectly framed.
Isidore Mankofsky's amber-washed cinematography fits the
movie like a glove, elbow-length, of course, and John Barry's
lush score is evocative without ever becoming overpowering
or hokey.
Admittedly, romances set in other periods aren't
everyone's cup of tea. But for those who can sit through its
first reel without feeling they're in the middle of a Kansas
corn field, "Somewhere in Time" is likely to be remembered
as one of 1980's most enjoyable motion pictures.
