good idea
Student government is to be congratulated, if not praised.
At least they are trying to find a solution to that age-old
problem confronting students time after time after time ?
hrtnlf r?rir>oc
Typical of the problem is a theater textbook, "Improvisation
for the Theater" which a year ago cost, in hardback,
$7.60 and this year cost $12.60 for the same book. Not a
bad profit for the publisher and the bookstore. Also equally
maddening is the bookstores penchant fpr re-purchasing a
book at about half the original cost and then marking it up
another 25 percent for re-sale. Handling charges, no doubt.
The student government, led by Larry Kellner, is trying to
do something about those handling charges. Beginning in the
spring the student government will operate an exchange
program.
Students will leave their name, telephone number and a list
of what books they wish to exchange with a student government
clearing house. This list will be available for other
students to check, and if they see what book they want, they
can call that other student and work out a deal. It will be nonprofit
and work on the barter system.
It seems a shame that the student government has to spend
its time trying to think up means and ways to help students
beat the spirling costs imposed on them by their own
"student" bookstore. But they must.
Hopefully the exchange program will work, as it does fairly
well at a few other universities. A similar attempt was made
two years ago and didn't get off the ground. Perhaps now,
with book prices becoming ridiculous, students will be more
willing to help and support and exchange system.
Whatever the result, student government is to be
