Should affirmative action programs be
abolished? Are these programs
discriminatory? These issues were the topic
of the Clariosophic Society's debate
Tuesday.
Speaking to an audience of 30, Carter Kyle
said affirmative action seldom accomplishes
its goal of equality and therefore
should be abolished. He stressed that
equality cannot be attained by using a
selective system that itself is
discriminatory.

arrest and conviction far

other larceny cases.
Harrelson said his attempts
to reduce the number of
thefts and break-ins have not
been successful. He said
police have tried to trap
campus bike thieves with a
police-owned 10-speed
bicycle under surveillance.

"We helped arrange for
them to go," Vlahopolous
said. "But they are paying
their own way."
Vlahopolous also said
the members of the
delegation appointed by
Riley will be paying for their
own flights. "We are only TheBetn
paying for the flights of the
university people," he said.

said affirmative action programs are
needed to create greater opportunities for
minorities.
Samuel said the programs are useful for
working toward equality. He said whites
started out far ahead of blacks and other
minorities in all aspects of society.
HE SAID affirmative action programs
give minorities opportunities they were
denied in the past.
After Kyle and Samuel presented their
cases,the floor was open for comments from
the audience. Most commentators agreed a
quality education is necessary if equality is
tobeacheived.
The resolution that such programs should
be abolished was defeated 10-5, but a
majority of the audience cast "undecided"
votes.
