Roosevelt.
Curtis Roosevelt came to
USC Wednesday for a
"Colloquium on Political
Strategy" sponsored by
the Institute of International
Studies. He came not as a
U.S. political expert, but as
an official with the U.N.
Secretariat. He has chosen
not to become involved in
American politics.
"I GREW UP with politics
all around me," said
Roosevelt, a U.N. official for
16 years. "The education I
have in politics you can
neither buy or study. It was
actually my grandmother
who influenced me toward
the United Nations."

Roosevelt said the
Secretariat evaluates some
of tuese programs.
Because of his affiliation
with the United Nations,
Roosevelt must limit his
comments on national
politics, but he said he does
not feel frustrated in his
position.
"I find that living in New
York City and working in the
United Nations is a personal
advantage," Roosevelt said.

member nation representatives
come to the United

in Nirobi or Geneva," he
said.
ROOSEVELT SAID HE
believes the average person
really doesn't know what a
U.N. representative does.
Many times, he said, people
are placed in countries other
than their own on a longform

when these people retire at
age 60, going back to their
countries can be an awkward
experience.
"I think my colleagues
deserve considerable
financial rewards," he said.
"Because of the mandatory ?
retirement fule, chances for
a second career after
retirement are slim."
