Advocates of the three major presidential
candidates debated at the USC Law School
Wednesday.
Henry Roberts, a computer science
engineer, spoke in favor of independent
candidate jonn Anderson. State Sen. Tom
Smith, D-Florence, spoke in support of
President Jimmy Carter, the Democratic
candidate, and Harry Dent, a lawyer and
author, represented Republican candidate
Ronald Reagan.
In his 10-minute opening speech,
Roberts said President Carter backed down
from the Soviets in Cuba and from the
militants in Iran.

ROBERTS PRAISED Anderson for
supporting civil rights legislation, the Equal
Rights Amendment, equal education and
equal pay.
Roberts also praised Anderson's energy
proposals, which include a 50-cent-a-gallon
gasoline tax, mass transit systems and
synthetic fuel production. Smith defended

Smith attacked Reagan's views on
abortion. "When he was governor of
California, he passed a bill in tavor of it, and
now he calls it murder," Smith said.
"THE PRESIDENT had tried to answer
difficult questions and problems the best
way possible for all concerned," said Smith.
"There are no simple answers to the
problems we face today," Smith said.

American people if we are ever to beat
inflation, a problem which did not occur
overnight.
"REAGAN SAYS government causes
inflation, and government can make it go
away. No government can do it without the
help of its people," Smith said.
Smith said Carter has improved U.S.
relations with many foreign governments
and has kept us out of war.
Dent disagreed with Smith's assessment
