Have you ever found more

working at a grocery store
on Sunday? If so, you witnessed
a crime.
One of South Carolina's
blue laws makes it illegal for
a grocery store to employ
nore than three persons at
one time on Sunday.

and other commercial activities
on Sunday except for
the sale of "emergency food
needs," which the laws
define as items needed by

Blue laws began more
than 16 centuries ago in
Rome, when Constantine the
Great ordered all citizens to
rest on Sunday. These laws
were introduced to
Americans by the English

Some interesting contradictions

these laws.
For instance, a T-shirt
with "USC" or "South
Carolina" printed on it may

because it is considered a
souvenir. But it is illegal to
buy a regular T-shirt.
South Carolinians may buy
bathing suits on Sunday, but
they might catch cold after a
swim because they can't
buy towels until Monday.

by fines of no less than $250
for a first offense and as
much as $2,000 and a sixmonth
jail term for subsequent
offenses.

are occasionally enforced,
grocery stores are not
policed every Sunday. "In
our world of priority, enforcing
all of the many blue
laws is near the bottom of
our list," said B.T. Galvin of
the Columbia Police Department.
