The Columbia City Council and USC still have not agreed
on plans to close Greene Street and add a mall area.
USC submitted a proposal outlining a new closing schedule
to the council a few weeks ago. If the council approves the
plans, Greene Street will be closed 24 hours a day, Monday
through Friday.
The university's plan for the Greene Street area includes
additional parking spaces. That's the Dlan's main stumblinc
block, said Councilman Rudy Barnes.
"I'M NOT OPPOSED to closing Greene Street," said
Barnes, "but if it's closed, we want it to benefit the
pedestrians."
Barnes said the plan shows a small mall area in front of
Russell House, and narkine areas where fiiwnp Str?>t in
tersects Sumter and Pickens streets.
"I don't want the area turned into a USC parking lot," said
Barnes. "We should be trying to move parking out from the
university."
BARNES SAID a solution might be reached by "the end of

planning, said the proposal will come before the council when
the university and the city agree on the plan.
Greene Street is now closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
