Carolina's soccer team experienced a rough time in
Illinois this weekend, dropping both games they played in
the Cougar Classic in Edwardsville.
On Friday, the Gamecocks lost to Southern Illinois
Kowarasviiie Dy a score 01 3-1. i ne following day the team
kwt by an identical score to Portland in the consolation
game.
USC has lost their last three contests, and the team's
record for the season now stands at 3-2-1. The Gamecocks

In Carolina's opening round loss to the defending national
champions, Tim Guelken scored for SIU-Edwardsville just
one minute into the game. The teams played the remainder
of the first half scoreless.
FIVE MINUTES into the second half, Mike Gauvain
scored for the home team to put the Gamecocks behind 2-0.
Edwardsville added another goal 18 minutes later when
Dan O'Keef scored.
Sophomore David Goodchild tallied a goal for Carolina
with eleven minutes remaining in the game to avoid a
snutout. it was (ioodcnud's fifth goal of the season, tying
him with Victor Wikstrom for the team lead in that

Portland, which lost to the eventual Cougar Classic
champion Indiana 4-2 in the first round, earned a spot Inversus
the Gamecocks in the consolation game. The game
was scoreless in a foul marred first half. Twenty fouls were SU1J
called on Portland alone in the first 45 minutes, compared
to only ten fouls whistled on Carolina. :
Portland's Ted Cook notched the first goal of the game on
a penalty kick eleven minutes into the second half.
Sophomore Eric Hawkes recorded his first goal of the g
year one minute after Cook's goal. Eric Hawkes was
credited with an assist on the play.
Jim Beidrich scored on a direct kick with 13 minutes
remaining in the final half to give Portland a 2-1 advantage.

Thompson.

THE GAMECOCKS fired 17 shots on goal in the contest,
compared to 11 for Portland. Thompson recorded seven .
saves and Carolina had seven corner kicks to two for the m
