While the Carolina starters were running up a 31-0
hnlfltnut in ^iiiiu'dav niahl'c witli
Wichita State, the Gamecock reserves were anxiously
awaiting a chance to play. When given the opportunity,
the\ didn't waste it. rolling up 42 second half points to
establish a modern day USC scoring record.
Mead coach Jim Carlen began resting starting running
backs George Rogers and Johnnie Wright early in the
second quarter and neither of the two backs saw any
action in the second half. But all five reserve backs and
both back-up quarterbacks more than took up the slack,
accounting for 311 yards rushing six touchdowns.
l.KAI)l\(i THK WAY was junior tailback Percy Reeves
with yards on 12 carries and one touchdown.
"It was a great win, all the guys contributed so
everyone was happy," Reeves said. Reeves also cited the
crowd as a n.otivational factor saying, "fans play a big
part, we need support and this is the best it's ever
been...the more intense the crowd, the more intense we
play."
Reserve Quarterback Gordon Beckham directed three
Gamecock scoring drives. Beckham felt the reserves
were ready to play. "Tonight everyone was into the
football game, not just watching on the sidelines."
Beckham said
Fullback Carl West gained 69 yards on just six carries,
including a 44 yard scamper to set up Beckham's
touchdow n "1 was very happy to get a chance to play and
contribute to the team.*' West said. West said that depth
was one of the keys in the game, commenting. "We have a

touchdown. Bishop, a sophomore from Thomson, Georgia,
completed Carolina's scoring with a four yard keeper in
the fourth quarter.
Blasingame, appearing in his first varsity game due to
an injury to fullback Jeff Kendziorski, commented on his
experience saying, "I watch the first team a lot so I know
what to do when I'm in there."
USC'S SECOND TEAM defense did its share in
preserving Carolina's second straight shutout. The
Gamecocks had not recorded consecutive shutouts since
1956 when they blanked Maryland and Wake Forest.
The reserve defensive line, composed of ends Greg
Turner, and Jim Walsh, tackles Mike Vargo and Donnie
McDaniel, and middle guard Ricky Hagood, stopped
Wichita State on its onlv scoring threat of the game.
A fumble by Blasingame at the Carolina 33 yard line
gave the Shockers their only penetration into Carolina
territory late in the fourth quarter. But the defense
stopped a reverse and forced three incomplete passes to
seal the whitewash.
Walk-on cornerback Jake Gadsden was impressive in
the second half, intercepting an errant Shocker pass and
returning it 29 yards to the 6 yard line, setting up Bishop's
touchdown.

Gadsden said. Gadsden echoed the thoughts of his
teammates, saying, "The defense takes a lot of pride in no
one scoring on us. It was important to get the shutout for
next week's (Southern California) game."
Beckham summed up the attitude of his teammates,
saying, "Being second string, you know you're not going
to start. But you hope to excel when you get in."
