It's a good thing the Carolina mascot, Big
Spur, doesn't do pushups after each USC
score, for the number he would've done
Saturday night against Wichita State might
have killed him.
When the WSU Shockers came to
Carolina, highlighted by the return of former
South Carolina State coach Willie
Jeffries, they hoped to live up to their team
nickname. However the only thing shocking
about the match was the overall performance
of the Gamecocks.
NOT ONLY WAS George Rogers able to
get in his weekly spectacular touchdown
sprint, and the defense awesome as usual,
but Carolina ran up a 73-0 shutout to shock
the record books as well.
It was the most points a Carolina squad
has scored in any modern day football
came, and the first time since 1956 that USC
has posted back-to-back shutouts.
Scoring on their first possession of each
quarter and several times in between, the
Gamecocks recorded ten touchdowns and
one field goal on 527 yards.
THE SHOCKERS MIGHT have known
from the outset that the game would be a
long one, when their first punt of the match
was blocked by defensive back Harry

drew Provence in WSU territory.
The story that unfolded from that point on
could be told in three chapters ? first,
second and third string. The list of people
who scored began to take on the appearance
of a team roster.
While the starting line-up still maintained
the field, an 18 yard pass from Garry
Haroer to tieht end Ben Cornett. and sue
cessive runs by Rogers and Johnnie Wright,
set up Wright's one yard scamper for the
first Carolina score of the night.
Leading off the second quarter, Harper
surprised the crowd with a third-and-long 19
! yard pass to tight end Willie Scott in the
end zone.
I TO THE DELIGHT of 56,761 Carolina
fans, George Rogers stole the show five
minutes later for yet another Gamecock

all important extra effort, Rogers zigzagged
his way through WSU defenders, and
sprinted 55 yards to the goal.
With Rogers taking a short rest it was up
to running back Percy Reeves to eat up [

raise the score to 24-0. Leopard's 41 yard
kick through the uprights was the longest of
his career.
Not to be left out of the limelight, the USC
defense came through with less than a
minute left in the first half. At Wichita's 32,
defensive end Phil Ellis, returning after an
injury last week, picked off a Price McJunkins

made their final appearance of the night for
the three-second scoring drive, and Rogers
took the carry for the two yard touchdown.
BY THE START of the second half,
Rogers, Harper and most of Carolina's
starting line up had retired for the night.
Even offensive back-ups Reeves, Carl West,
and Gordon Beckham would soon take a
seat on the sidelines, while names like
Berry, Bishop, Blasingame and McKie
became prevaiant.
Rogers wasn't upset about being pulled
from the game at the half with 108 yards to
his credit.
"The Heisman Trophy means a whole lot,
but as long as we keep winning, winning is
all that counts," Rogers said. "As long as
we keep winning, I think they will keep
looking at me even though I don't play the
whole game and get that many yards."
Opening the third quarter, sophomore
running back West ran off 51 yards in two
plays, and teamed with Reeves to set up the
fifth Carolina touchdown. On a quarterback
keeper, Beckham rolled in for the score.
Reeves followed nearly two minutes later
with a six yard touchdown effort, posting the
score at 45-0.
WITH 4:18 LEFT in the quarter, Beckham
connected on an 18 yard pass to DeWayne
Chivers for a touchdown. Three minutes
later freshman running back Todd Berry
charged in for another score, boosting
Carolina's margin to 59.
