"My goal as an actor,"
said Chuck Morris, "is to
project a certain image on
the screen-a hero-type of an
image that the kids can look
up to and relate to."
In keeping with that goal,
the retired six-time World
Karate Champion said he
plans to continue making
motion pictures in which the
martial arts play an important
part in the story.
"Five years from now, I'll

play in something else," he
said, "but not right now."
Before Norris found his
way into the motion picture
industry, he was a successful
instructor in the martial
arts, with a chain of seven
schools bearing his name. In
1975, however, after playing
a pivotal role in Return of
the Dragon with Bruce Lee,
Norris gave up teaching in
order to concentrate on his
film career.
That decision led to
starring roles in Breaker,
Breaker, Good Guys Wear
Black, A Force of One and
the just-released The Octagon.
Most of the films
underwent several title

Norris said, "because it's
hard to get a title that's
strong but doesn't sound
kung-fooey."
Most of the pictures have
also been rated "R" because
of violence (A Force of One
being the sole exception),
but Norris firmly believes
that, when used with the
proper philosophy, karate
and the martial arts should
not be considered violence.
"If the philosophy is
stressed." Norris exolained.

To me, violence is like The
Warriors. The action is
there with absolutely no
philosophy behind it. But in
my films, the only time I
ever use karate is when I
have no other choice. It's
used as a preventive
measure rather than an
aggressive measure, and it's
only used as a last resort."
To his millions of fans, the

Norris' movies are the action
sequences (which he
choreographs himself), but
to Norris, those are the least
exciting moments. "The
acting part of it is more
exciting to me," he said,
"because I've been fighting
for a much longer time - 20
years.
"I'm pretty confident
about my abilities as a
fighter, but the acting is a
different story. After I saw
Good Guys Wear Black, I
said, 'Gosh, my acting is
really bad/ I got really
discouraged. But Steve
McQueen, who was one of
my students, said 'Hey, don't
worry about it. Do you
remember my first movie?
The Blob?"
After McQueen convinced
Norris that Good Guys Wear
Black wasn't as bad as he
thought, Norris decided to
continue his acting career
with A Force of One, which
received more than its share
of favorable reviews.
Reviews, so far, have
played a big part in the way
Norris goes about creating
his characterizations. He
