Three university employees have been
arrested after property valued at $10,000
was stolen from a university-owned apartment
in May.

housebreaking and grand larceny. The
three employees of Auxiliary Services at
USC were suspended indefinitely without
pay until the charges are resolved.
JOHN R. HOGGLE was using the apartment
at 816 Henderson St. while he waited
for the university to assign him a residence

Hoggle said he and his fiancee moved
many of their belongings into the apartment
May 18 and 19. He said they locked the
apartment and checked with the Residential
Life Services Office to be sure no keys to the
apartment were in circulation.
The couple left Columbia May 19 and went
to Bristol, Tenn. where they were married
May 24. After a brief honeymoon in
Williamsburg, Va., the Hoggles returned to
Bristol to bring wedding gifts to USC. When
they arrived in Columbia May 31, they found
the apartment ransacked.
"I came up the back steps and unlocked
the back door," Hoggle said. "I walked in

Hoggle said no one else lived in the
complex this summer.
He called campus security and President
James B. Holderman. "The police came
and said that there was no forcible entry and
the next morning they came over to take
fingerprints," Hoggle said.

Ward called June 2, Hogglesaid. "We asked
him about reimbursement for our property
and he said the school had no insurance/'
Hoggle said. "He said that he would get
back in touch with us and that we would
have to wait until after the investigator
made his report before we could even begin
to talk about reimbursement."
Hoggle said Ward did not get back in
touch with him. When he called Ward's
office June 25, Hoggle said he was told Ward
was out of town. "At that point, we felt we
had done all that we could. We felt we
needed legal assistance."
