n for Hei USC running back George Rogers is one of only six college football players that have been invited to take part in a nationwide tour during the first week of August. The tour is co-sponsored by the NCAA and ABC-TV and is designed to promote college football. After the tour's initial stop at the College Football Hall of Fame in Mike Chibbaro Sports Editor Kings Island, Ohio, Rogers and company will visit New York City, Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Cincinnati. The tour has traditionally become a part ot tne campaign tor the Heisman Trophy and other prestigious college football honors. It provides the nation's media with a chance to meet the candidates personally. Last year, Southern Cal running hark Charles White nartirinated in ~ ' K ? ~K the tour. He won the Heisman Trophy. Also on last year's tour was N.C. State's Jim Ritcher, who won the Outland Trophy as the nation's best college lineman. Without a doubt, Rogers is a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate: the first ever at USC. Rogers has rushed for 3,310 yards in his three year career and he is one of college football's most exciting performers. IN ESSENCE, Rogers is a twodimensional back. First there is Rogers the dancer...gliding and slashing his huge but agile frame through the arms of would-be tacklers. By no means, however, is Rogers a shoe-in for the prestigious Heisman. His receipt of this award remains contingent. upon niimarniic nipmimctannac UAIIVI </UO V1& VUIIIOKIIIVVO. Obviously, Rogers must turn in another brilliant individual performance this season. But equally important, the Gamecocks must fare well as a team. Nine out of the past ten Heisman Trophy winners have played on teams that finished among the top five squads in the nation. The majority of the 44 past recipients of the Heisman have played for "name" schools such as Ohio State, Southern Cal, and Notre Dame. Also, Rogers must receive plenty of national exposure. Fortunately, the Gamecock's schedule lends itself toward that kind of exposure with road games at Southern Cal and Michigan. WITH THE RETURN of Johnnie Wright to the Gamecock backfield, another obstacle stands in the way of USC's Heisman Trophy candidate. Wright, with his 9.8 speed, is a tailor-made tailback. Unfortunately, as a tailback last season, Rogers set a school rushing record with 1,681 yards. If the Gamecocks continue to run their offense out of the I-formation, one of these thoroughbreds is going to have to play fullback. Although Rogers is familiar with the fullback position, that is certainly no place to hide a Heisman Trophy candidate. Don't be surprised to see the Gamecocks employing a pro set (split backfield) more often this season. In any event, it is a nice problem for a coach to have. ! Demonstrating - his normal humble attitude, Rogers views the week-long tour as a chance to bring his team "the recognition we deserve. I'm going to tell them what kind of team we have and then we're going to have to go out and prove it," Rogers said. Joining Rogers on the tour will be Purdue quarterback Mark Hermann, Pitt defensive end Hugh Green, and Baylor linebacker Mark Singletary. Coaches Bear Bryant of Alabama, Dan Devine of Notre Dame, and Johnny Majors of Tennessee will also take part in the tour.
