Athlei
Although unity is one of the most
essential elements in any succesful
athletic program, it has not been
the strong suit of USC's athletic
depatment in recent years. For the
past decade, the university's two
major sports, football and

basketball have operated as
separate entities.
It seemed as though a series of
irreconcilable differences had
accumulated > ;between the
respective leaders of these two
programs. As a result, a unique
situation was created in the USC
athletic department. The football
and basketball programs at USC
formed their own separate
hierarchial structures. Former
football coach and athletic director
Paul Dietzel ran the football
program and Frank McGuire
handled matters at the Coliseum.
In 1974, Jim Carlen replaced
Dietzel and the USC athletic
department remained "a house
divided."

football and basketball teams at
USC had in common was the
Gamecock mascot. Each program
had its own clique and the divisions
between the two programs were
made obvious. A separte sports
information director was created
to handle the duties of the football
program and each team had their
own athletic trainer.
When asked why Coach McGuire
was not requested to be a member
of the selection committee which
found his replacement, a highranking
USC official said, "I
wouldn't want to put Coach Carlen
and Coach McGuire in the same
room together."
Attempts to create an athletic
directorship which would rule over
all USC athletic affairs failed. USC
athletics lived on in what could
best be described as peaceful
coexistence.
BUT AT LAST, it appears as
though the athletic department is
making strides toward becoming a
more cohesive and unified
organization. With the arrival of
new head basketball coach, Bill
Foster, the working reationship
between the two programs appears
to have improved immensely.
Basketball and football are on the
road to becoming mutually supportive

All of the ingredients for total
athletic success are present at
USC...plush facilities, proven
coaches, a growing women's
program, and loyal fans. The
catalyst for the proper mixing of
these elements is obviously unity.
MISCELLANEOUS...Former
USC pitcher Jeff Twitty is experiencing
a very "up and down"

month ago, Twitty was called up to
the major leagues by the Kansas

impending players strike, Twitty
