some of them put an urtneeded and
unwanted damper on the entire
film. When we see Ralph (Barry
Miller) become dependent on
drugs and Coco (Irene Cara, who
was so good in Sparkle a few years i
back) lured into making a porno \
film, we feel nauseous. Painting \
these characters as sacrificial *
victims brings the senior year j
section of Fame down to the
messy, angst-ridden level of All ,
That Jazz, but without the razzledazzle
brilliance of Bob Fosse's
recent Oscar nominee.
Actually, I prefer the subdued
colors and authenticity of Fame to
the neonized hues and
megalomania of the Fosse film
because in All That Jazz, we never
have the idea that we are doing
anything but watching a movie. In
Fame, we feel as if we have
temporarily become students at
the High School for Performing <
Arts. Maybe that's why it hurts so ;
much to see our comrads :
manipulated for no other reason !
than to give the film dramatic
impact. Parker does such a good
job of making the characters i
likeable in the first part of the film
that his bargain-basement bathos
in the last 20 minutes is simply i
gratuitous. I

ending can be <
overlooked because what comes i
before it is so good. Each and fevery
production number bristles
with intensity and at least five of
the songs are so instantly likeable
that one is apt to leave the theatre
with only one thought in mind^Tve
got to buy that soundtrack!"

himself of this terrifying affliction,
he begins therapy with a dream
analyst, Dr. William Haber,
played by actor Kevin Conway.
. Instead of seeking a cure for his
patient's unique affliction, Dr.
Haber decides to use Orr's psychic
dreams to try and create a Utopian
society free from war, disease and
over-population. However, there
are terrible side-effects for society
as George is forced, under the
power of hypnosis, to dream up
new worlds suggested by Haber.
Eventually, the very fabric of
existence begins to collapse as a
result.
"Much of the film is a sequence
of dreams created inside George's
brain," says Ms. Le Guin. "One of
our most important creative
decisions was made before filming
? when we decided to film the
dreams as if they were actual

imagination.
According to the author, The
Lathe of Heaven shows what can
happen if the American Dream
becomes an American Nightmare.
"Both the book and the movie
make asa important point, but it's
not an easy one to boil down into
one sentence. You have to figure it
out."

especially Cara, who has the style
and vocal intensity to become a
superstar along the lines of Donna
Summer. Her renditions of
"Fame," "Hot Lunch Jam" and
"Out Here On My Own" are among
the film's highlights.
Fame is a delightful,
refreshing and maybe even important
movie , that everyone
connected with can be proud of,
