Renewal of AR/5!
By Tammy Kilpatrick
Gamecock Staff Writer
President James Holderman and Vice President of Student Affairs
James Campbell will meet today to decide if the Cafeteria Committee's
recommendation to renew AHA Dining Services contract should be
accepted.
The contract with AHA calls for an annual review, with either the
university or ARA terminating the contract if it is not renewed within 30
days of expiration.

chairman of the committee, said the cafeteria committee was appointed
by Campbell this year because of complaints about AHA service.
Recommendations to renew the contract previously have been decided
by administrative discussion.
"The overall evaluation came out to a 3.0 which was good," Stewart
said. "Most of the comments were very good, and complimented the
service given by the staff."
The committee used a four point scale ranging fror < tcellent to pqor
in rating the cafeteria. Housekeeping and sanitation, service, appearance,
and taste of food and customer relations were categories
used in computing the ratings.
THE TOP of Carolina had the highest overall rating with a 3.9 while
Bates Cafeteria was rated 3.7 and Capstone was rated 3.5. The lowest
rating was the Gamecock Snack Bar with a 2.3.
Six administration members were on the committeeas well as three
students. Stewart pointed out that only one student member actuall>
participated in the surveys.
Holderman recently criticized the service provided by AHA in a
meeting with dormitory students, but Stewart said the committee was
given a "free hand" in making their recommendations.
"I understand the president made some remarks to dormitory
residents about the food , but no one told us to evaluate it one way or
another,"he said.
Campbell said the committee spent a lot of time investigating dining
services. "I think they did a thorough examination and they came forth
with an honest opinion,"he said. A little more than a week was spent in
evaluating the cafeterias.
He added that a decision should be reached today, but a decision could
come later in the week.
LESTER AIKEN, director of ARA, said he thought the committee
report was complimentary to AHA. "It's very fair and I thought they
did a good job,"he said.
No dining service employees knew when the committee would be
observing the cafeterias, according to Aiken. "I knew they were going
to be visiting units, but I did not know where or when they would be
there,"Aiken said. Stewart said different committee members visited

RENOVATIONS in Russell House have improved sales, Aiken said.
"The customer count's up," he said.
