A 90-man specialty crew and 90
air crewmen took off in eight
helicopters from an aircraft

helicopters had mechanical
problems by the time they reached
a desert 200 miles from Iran,
where C-130 planes awaited to
refuel the helicopters.
Based on advance planning, five
helicopters were not capable of
carrying out the mission and the
whole operation was cancelled.

helicopters and the planes left the
desert.
"This is when the real tragedy
occurred,' Cronkite said. As one
helicopter was attempting to lift
off it collided with one of the C-130
planes on the ground. Both aircraft
burst into flames, killing eight of
the Americans and burning four.
Cronkite said the eight bodies
were left behind because efforts to
recover them at the time would
have jeopardized the rest of the
